Your body is designed to heal!

With a treatment plan unique to you and your health history, you will heal.

Your story is yours alone. There may be many root causes of your symptoms that a single pill or protocol can't resolve. Together we will determine the right path to healing.

Acupuncture, nutrition and coaching come together and form a holistic approach to healing and being. The body, mind and spirit are a whole— your body isn’t a collection of separate parts nor should you be treated as such. Through an acupuncturist’s holistic lens, I look at your entire health history to determine a course of treatment specific for you and your needs and goals. This looks different for every body.

Below you will find answers to some of our more common questions. If you have additional questions, please send us a message.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a type of traditional Chinese medicine that has been used for thousands of years. Some research cites records of acupuncture treatments from 3,500 years ago.

Acupuncture is used to help heal illness and improve well-being. Hair-thin needles are inserted into specific points on the skin to help activate an energy in the body, called qi (pronounced ch-ie). According to traditional Chinese medicine, qi is the body's life force. It helps regulate and move energy to keep us well and engaged in our lives. Disharmony and disease happens when energy is blocked. Stress, environmental factors, lifestyle behaviors, and genetics are some of the things that can block qi. Magic happens in the treatment room when using the right points, in the right combination, at the right time.

What does acupuncture treat?

In contemporary China, acupuncture is used to treat every symptom that is presented and is not considered an alternative medicine or adjacent treatment. Practitioners treat everything from asthma to diabetes. In the Western healthcare, acupuncture is more commonly used as part of a care plan for a variety of health conditions or as an adjacent therapy.

Research shows acupuncture is an effective modality for many common conditions. It can address disorders of the nervous, digestive, endocrine, immune, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and reproductive systems. According to the WHO, acupuncture successfully treats nearly 100 modern issues, including a range of physical symptoms and diseases as well as mental health concerns. Among many other conditions, acupuncture can help anxiety, arthritis, asthma, neuralgia, back pain, depression, dizziness, fatigue and chronic fatigue, eating disorders, tendonitis, infertility, impotence, menstrual disorders, migraines, sciatica, skin conditions, stroke recovery, and ulcers.

What is a treatment like?

Initial treatments will take up to 90 minutes and include a thorough intake. This is where I learn your health history, current health concerns and goals for treatment. During the first session you will also have your first acupuncture treatment. I will use pulse diagnosis and will craft a treatment plan which will include diet, lifestyle, exercise, and supplement recommendations. Follow-up sessions last one hour. Treatment frequency depends on your unique health circumstances and desired outcomes. A typical course of treatment includes 6-10 weekly sessions. Following a successful course of treatment, patients will come for a seasonal tune-up or on an as-needed basis.

How does acupuncture work?

The classical Chinese explanation is that channels (meridians) with circulating energy move around our bodies in regular patterns. These channels, or meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body. Meridians irrigate and nourish our tissues, organs and muscles. An obstruction in the movement of these rivers disrupts our ability to move freely, with ease and in good health. Needling an acupuncture point impacts the flow of energy by removing obstructions in the body's meridians which in turn impact the body.

Does science have different ideas about how and why acupuncture works?

The modern scientific explanation is that needling specific acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord and brain. These chemicals either change the way someone experiences pain or that by stimulating an acupuncture point the body releases other chemicals and hormones which influence the body’s own regulating system.  One major hypothesis is that acupuncture works through neurohormonal pathways. Basically, you put the needle at specific points in the body and stimulate the nerve. The nerve then sends signals to the brain and the brain releases neural hormones such as beta-Endorphins.
